About Us

Conquering gravity since 2009

Venturing Crew 5.14, from Hawk Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America, is sponsored by the Birdsboro Area Climbers Association and meets at Reading Rocks Climbing and Fitness every Wednesday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Each meeting’s program varies depending on the program planned by our youth leadership and will frequently include learning and working on climbing skills, outdoor activities, preparing for campouts, working on advancement or other such projects.

Venturing is an adventure based on challenge, leadership training and experience. At Crew 5.14, we hold many of our activities outdoors. We plan to conduct monthly campouts, in addition to our annual high adventure trip.

Encouraging Leadership

Every adult leader in the Crew is a volunteer. Many have several years of Scouting and many more years of climbing experience. However, our program is not about adults telling youth what they should or should not do. It is all about Venturers (youth) planning and executing their own program. The Crew youth officers are responsible for leading Crew 5.14 in all its activities. They do a great job.

Our program helps Venturers learn the skills and traits they need to succeed in life. We encourage all parents to become involved in the Crew, as this has proven to be the best way for a Venturer to succeed.

We offer youth the opportunity to become leaders, to challenge themselves in an outdoor setting, and to be a part of a group that believes in the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Environmental Stewardship

Crew 5.14 is developing an environmental stewardship program called Climbers Gone Clean. This program will serve as our crew’s on-going outreach to the Birdsboro Waters property where we climb frequently. The Birdsboro Quarry, maintained by the Birdsboro Area Climbers Association, Crew 5.14’s charter organization, has become our local crag. The Birdsboro Waters also resides within the Hay Creek Watershed. Through partnership with the Hay Creek Watershed Association and the Birdsboro Area Climbers Association, Crew 5.14’s Climbers Gone Clean program aims to improve recreational access, to maintain our environmental resources, and to promote Leave No Trace skills.

Creating a worthwhile program that educates youth in the techniques of rock climbing, bouldering and rappelling, and the principles of climbing ethics, stewardship of the envionment, and leadership.
